Census Returns
Census returns are available from 1841 and every ten years until 1901. They are an excellent resource and can enable the genealogist to trace ancestors back a generation or further
Just received your information, and, as usual, am so pleased. Thank you again for your terrific work. ![]()
Although census returns were taken by the British government on a number of previous occasions, the 1841 census was the first to contain details of the persons inhabiting each house and is therefore the first to be of any genealogical value. Since then a census of the population has been taken every ten years, the latest available being 1901.
The census returns are an enormous help in tracing British ancestors, especially those from 1851 onwards as these will normally include the age and place of birth of each family member, enabling the genealogist to trace ancestors back a generation or further. The information on most census returns will include:
- Name
- Marital Status
- Age
- Occupation
- Birthplace
- Relationship to head of household
Digitized images of all available census returns can now be accessed at Ancestry.com.
Once you have located your ancestors on these records BRITISH ANCESTORS can help find their birth, marriage and death/burial information
